Extending PostgreSQL to Google Spanner architecture

  • Talk in English

PostgreSQL, a single-node RDBMS, is widely adopted for its powerful set of features while being fully open-source RDBMS. However, it is hard to run PostgreSQL as a cloud-native database, which can inherently survive failures, scale horizontally, and be deployed in geo-distributed configurations. Google Spanner is a distributed SQL database that has these features, however, it does not offer the power of PostgreSQL. Combining the best of these two databases would result in a very compelling database. YugabyteDB is a fully open-source distributed SQL database aimed at achieving exactly this goal.

In this talk, we will look at the architecture of YugabyteDB that enables it to support all PostgreSQL features along with distributed transactions, resilience, scalability, and geo-distribution of data.
